Hitting the Spam Button

Don't Push the SPAM Button There are five best practices before subscribers open your messages to help keep them from hitting the spam button.

1. From Address

Make sure your From address is friendly and recognizable. It should contain the name of your company or well-known personality related to your company.

2. Subject Line

Ensure your subject line is relevant and matches the content of your email. It must also speak in the language of your audience without using language that will land your message in the Junk folder.

3. Message Timing

It is important to send your messages in regular intervals, such as weekly or monthly, so the subscriber comes to expect them. Irregular or missed messages will result in increased complaints.

4. Consistent Schedule

When your subscribers enrolled in your program, hopefully you told them how often they could expect to receive messages from you. If you change that schedule, without first re-gaining their permission, you will create many complaints.

5. List Hygiene

Most important, send messages only to those who have currently requested to receive your message. Never send to addresses that come from a third party, and be diligent not to re-add members who have previously unsubscribed. This is critical since it only takes one complaint in 1,000 to get your messages blocked.
