New stats out for August show a huge increase in the number of video streams watched online from the same time a year ago. The metric coming from Nielsen VideoCensus showed a 41% increase in the number of online video streams viewed in the month of August compared to August of 2008. Not only is the number of streams up but the amount of time spent viewing video online are also up. Nielsen showed a 39% increase in the amount of time spent watching video online when compared to August of 2008.
Unsurprisingly, the number one source for these video streams was YouTube with just over 60% of the streams viewed. The next closest source was Hulu, which amounted to 3.4% of the streams viewed. However, that number is a little skewed due to the fact that Hulu has long format videos and YouTube has a lot of 3 to 10 min. videos.
I think this increase will continue as more and more TV shows end up online. Companies are also starting to see YouTube as a marketing based search engine as well as more people are searching for business related information. Whenever we add video to our client's web site we always try to place it on YouTube (preferably in a channel for the client) and stream it through the site. When we do this we always see more views from the video coming from YouTube than we do from the client's site. It's very important to take advantage of YouTube in this way.
