Twitter and Marketing

For the younger socially connected audience Twitter is a marketing tool worth taking a look at.  There are several ways to use Twitter.  Some companies waste a lot of time and money trying to implement Twitter as a social marketing tool.  It's important to create a strategy first and then look to see if Twitter makes sense as a tool that fits within the strategy vs. creating a strategy around Twitter.

We help companies create social marketing strategies for our clients but we thought we'd share some best practices when using Twitter as a marketing tool.  Twitter is fairly new so best practices will be changing as more and more companies start to use Twitter as a way to interact with their audience.

  • Make sure your tweets provide value (Twitter only coupons, new product sneak peaks, etc.)
  • Do not send unsolicited @messages or DMs particularly when you include a promotional link.
  • If your using the account to send promotions make sure you explain the purpose of the account in your bio.
  • Don't always send links about yourself.  Add links and information about related content that your followers may find relevant.
  • People love it when you share their ideas so retweet information that you think your audience would find interesting.
  • Look for tweets about your brand, your products, your competitors and their products to find out what people are saying.

When used correctly Twitter can be an effective marketing tool.  When used incorrectly Twitter can damage your brand.  Make sure you consult a company such as Ontarget to make sure you get the most out of your social marketing.  Give us a call we'd love to help.
